Sustainability
From the beginning, we have considered sustainability a core value of Heartell Press. We have always used 100% post-consumer recycled paper for all of our paper products. The inks we use for our letterpress cards and prints are vegetable-oil based with no hydrocarbon solvents. The black ink we use is made with the first bio-based, renewable pigment alternative to carbon black (a carcinogen derived at great environmental detriment from petroleum). It is created by Living Ink from algae, the very same kind (spirulina) that you can add to your smoothie!
As we expand our product line, we are taking sustainability into consideration from the earliest stages of product development. Our Generous Kitchen Towels are a great alternative to paper towels. They are made with non-toxic dyes and water-based inks. The packaging we developed is 100% recyclable in the paper waste stream, including the label’s release liners which are usually coated in plastic and not recyclable. We hope to be able to introduce organic cotton into our assortment as supply chain issues resolve during the covid era.
We are in the process of switching all of our shipping and packaging materials over to 100% recycled. Most of our mailers are now recycled and we’re working on sourcing 100% post-consumer recycled cardboard boxes. We have stopped sleeving the cards sold on our retail site in plastic and are transitioning away from cello sleeves for our wholesale customers as well. We recently switched to kraft recycled boxes from plastic boxes for our card sets.
